3. Roof pitch and access. A steep roof, a screened porch in the way, landscaping tight under the eaves, or a section hanging over a deck all slow a job down. We'd rather take the extra time than rush something 25 feet in the air.
4. The guard itself. This is where quotes swing the most — and where most homeowners get burned.

Not Every "Gutter Guard" Is the Same Product

• Plastic snap-in covers. The big-box option, roughly $2 to $4 a foot. They warp in Ozarks heat, pop loose in storms, and let fine debris straight through.
• Foam inserts. Cheap and easy. They trap seeds and turn into a planter box within a couple of seasons.
• Brush inserts. A giant bottle brush sitting in your gutter. It catches leaves and then holds them there to rot.
• Open-front hoods. Better built, but the same front opening that lets water curl in also lets pine needles and shingle grit in.
• Stainless-steel micro-mesh. What we install. American-made, and the openings are small enough to stop pine needles and shingle grit. It's all metal, so it doesn't warp or get brittle in the sun.

What the National Companies Charge

Some of that gap is product. A lot of it is the sales model: the in-home presentation, the commissioned rep, the discount that expires when he stands up to leave.
